Bhopal gas tragedy
is counted among the world’s major industrial accidents of the 20th century.
The researchers at Norvergence also conducted research from an environmental
point of view on the incident “The Bhopal Gas Tragedy” to know more about the
causes and effects of the incident on humans and their surroundings.
Firstly, this
incident is one of the major industrial accidents as more than 3,787 people
were reported dead due to the leakage of the toxic methyl isocyanate gas in Bhopal.
The incident took place at midnight on 2nd Dec 1984 at Union Carbide Corporation
Company in Bhopal.
Secondly, the side
effects of the gas leakage could be seen even in the following years after the
incident like children born after the disaster was also the victims as most
babies deliveries after the disaster reported disability in the child. The
people who survived also suffered from diseases like respiratory problems, eye
irritation or blindness, and other maladies resulting from exposure to the toxic
gas.
Thirdly, the
chemical wastes remained dumped in and around the premises of the UCIL factory,
contaminating the water bodies in and around Bhopal. The environment needed
help as if the populated water was consumed by any could further suffer health
issues caused by the toxic gas.
All the three
factors mentioned above made the Bhopal Gas Tragedy is one of the biggest
industrial accidents as it affected continued for years after the incident took
place.
The researchers at Norvergence feels it’s time for the government to make strong policies related to
industrial safety. The Bhopal incident could have been managed or prevented if
the government made sure that the company is qualified enough to handle any
emergency and on the other hand the government should have information about
the chemical and the extent of danger and safety required before providing the
license to any such company.
